Design of a POLCA Cellular System: linking FTMS thinking and Factory Physics Principles

A variety of manufacturing layout types may be applicable in a practical situation, such as functional, cellular, dynamic, fractal, holonic and modular. In this presentation, we will shortly discuss the advantages and disadvantages of these layout types. Understanding this is important for selecting an appropriate layout type. Next, we will focus on the design of a POLCA layout. We will show that Factory Flow Analysis, in combination with principles of Factory Physics, is a valuable tool for POLCA layout planning. Furthermore, we show the importance of FTMS considerations when selecting a particular POLCA layout. Methods will be illustrated by means of an industrial instance.
