How Alcon implemented QRM and restructured a Motorsport Engineering environment
Alistair Fergusson - Managing Director & Garry Wiseman - Chief Engineer - Motorsport Brakes
Learn about Alcon’s first steps in a journey that is already delivering a new way of collaborating, to reduce lead time and improve ‘first time right’ results for complicated bespoke brake solutions. Alcon recognised the potential of QRM when Managing Director Alistair Fergusson was lent a copy of Rajan Suri's first book by an employee. In 2016 members of Alcon’s Senior Management Team attended the QRM Conference in Warsaw to learn more and returned to initiate their first QRM pilot in November 2016, in the area of design and manufacturing of premium motorsport brake solutions.
The pilot project’s focus is in design engineering, production engineering & prototype manufacturing, and engaging competencies ranging from Chief Product Engineer through Production Engineering to CNC machining technicians who produce the first part.
Established in 1983, Alcon initially made brakes for Audi Sport’s Group B Quattro rally cars. Today the company’s 200 employees provide clutch and braking solutions across the top echelons of motorsport, for prestige and performance car manufacturers, and for military and other special vehicle applications. It’s primary factory and HQ is in Tamworth, England and it now has a subsidiary in Northampton UK, undertaking precision machining for motorsport and automotive, plus a sister business in the USA undertaking racing brake testing and manufacture.
